Yuanmingyuan

Yuanmingyuan,before its destruction,was referred to as the “Garden of Gardens”,since it was a combination① of gardens of different styles,Chinese and Western.

Yuanmingyuan consisted of② three gardens,Yuanmingyuan,Changchunyuan and Qichunyuan.They covered 350 hectares.

The best-known Western structures were a fountain,a maze(迷宫) and European palaces,all of a Renaissance style.In a small lake was built a model of Venice.

The emperor’s apartments were adorned with art treasures of an astonishing richness.The garden was beautified by millions of foreign flowers and trees.

The Old Summer Palace yellow array,one of the scenes in the Garden of Perfect Splendour,has been reconstructed③.It is a maze of winding paths between low walls in the eastern part of the garden.

Unfortunately,on 6 October 1860,the British and French troops attacked and looted④ Yuanmingyuan.About 2 weeks later on 18 October,the British set Yuanmingyuan on fire.The garden was in flames for three days destroying most of the Chinese-style buildings constructed with wood.

During the looting of Yuanmingyuan,many imperial treasures⑤ were stolen and taken out of China.Among the treasures stolen were sculptures of the 12 bronze zodiacs sculptures⑥ that graced Emperor Qianlong’s fountains.

Visitors today can see a few blocks of stone and broken marble that once belonged to the European palaces constructed under Emperor Qianlong between 1740 and 1747.

过去分词作定语和宾语补足语

一、过去分词作定语

过去分词是非谓语动词的一种形式,它既保留了动词的某些特征,又具有形容词和副词的特征。

1.过去分词作定语时的位置

单个过去分词作定语一般置于被修饰的词语之前,过去分词短语作定语时一般置于被修饰的词语之后。

To her the outside world was a totally unknown quantity.

对她来说,外部世界完全是个未知数。

Who were the so-called guests invited to your party last night?

昨晚被邀请参加你的聚会的那些所谓的客人是谁呀?

Things bought through computers are much cheaper.

通过电脑购买的物品要便宜得多。

2.过去分词作定语时的功能

过去分词作定语时,其功能相当于一个定语从句,因此可以改为相应的定语从句。

The injured workers are now being taken good care of in the hospital.

= The workers who were injured are now being taken good care of in the hospital.

受伤的工人现正在医院受到良好的照料。

Polluted air and water are harmful to people’s health.

=Air and water which have been polluted are harmful to people’s health.

被污染的空气和水对人们的健康有害。

3.过去分词作定语时的意义

一般来说,及物动词的过去分词作定语,表示一个被动的、已完成的动作;不及物动词的过去分词作定语不含有被动意义,只表示该动作已完成。

The damaged car is being repaired in the garage.

被损坏的车正在修理厂维修。

This is a book written by the famous film star.

这是那个著名的电影明星写的书。

When there is a wind,the fallen leaves are swept up into the sky.

有风时,落叶被刮到天空中。

Tom’s grandfather is a retired engineer.

汤姆的爷爷是位退休工程师。

二、过去分词作宾语补足语

1.特征及含义

(1)及物动词的过去分词作宾语补足语与宾语有逻辑上的被动关系,表示被动意义或已完成意义,有时候两者兼而有之。

When I opened the door,I found the ground covered with snow.

当我打开门时,我发现地面被雪覆盖着。

Back from his two-year medical service in Africa,Dr Lee was very happy to see his mother taken good care of at home.

李博士在非洲进行了两年的医疗服务,回来后看到他的母亲在家里被照顾得很好他很高兴。

(2)不及物动词用作宾语补足语时,与宾语没有逻辑上的动宾关系,只表示动作的完成或状态。

They found all the guests gone when they woke up.

当他们醒来时,发现所有的客人都走了。

When I came in,I saw a strange girl seated in the corner.

我进来时看到一个陌生的女孩坐在角落里。

2.使用过去分词作宾补的几种情况

(1)在感官动词watch,notice,see,hear,listen to,feel,find,observe等后。

He found his hometown greatly changed.

他发现他的家乡变化很大。

Mr Brown saw the walls painted white when he came back.

布朗先生回来后发现墙被刷成了白色。

(2)在表示“致使”的动词如get,keep,leave,have,make等后。

We must try our best to get the work finished before Friday.

我们必须尽力在周五前完成工作。

Please keep me informed if anything happens.

如果发生任何事情请通知我。

The speaker raised his voice in order to make himself heard.

为了让自己被听到,演讲者提高了声音。

(3)在表示爱憎、意愿的动词如want,wish,like,hate等后。

(4)用在with结构中,该结构通常在句中作时间、方式、条件、原因等状语。

The thing that is surprising about__2__ is that it opens in the middle. It does this to let the big ships go __3__ to the Pool of London. If you are __4__ enough to see the bridge with its two opening arms high in the air, you will never forget it.

Tower Bridge is more than one hundred years old. It was built in the __5__. By 1850, everyone __6__ that a bridge across the Thames near the Tower London which is almost a thousand years old was most necessary. But the __7__ argued about the new bridge for about  __8__ thirty years. The argue lasted so long because of two problems. The new bridge must look like the Tower of London—everyone said so. It __9__ not look like a modern bridge. But because of the tall ships it was __10__ to have a modern design.

At last, two __11__ designers had the idea of an opening bridge. And they made it look like the Tower, so everyone was __12__. It was a wonderful success. There was so much traffic on the river  __13__ the bridge opened at least twelve times a day. A hundred years ago, the River Thames was London's  __14__ road.

Today big __15__ don't come so far up the Thames. Tower Bridge opens perhaps only twice a week, __16__ the same wonderful machinery is still working. It can still lift the two __17__ opening arms—each 1,000 tons—__18__seventy meters for the ships  to go through. And they can still open and close the__19__in one－and－a－half minutes.

Things are changing now at Tower Bridge, but  __20__ happens in its exciting future, Tower Bridge will always mean London.
