Mozart:the greatest musician of all time

Mozart was a composer,possibly the greatest musician of all time.He only lived 35 years and he composed① more than 600 pieces of music.

Mozart was born in Salzburg,Austria on January 27,1756.His father,Leopold,was a bookbinder.He was also a violin teacher and became famous when he published② a method of study for the violin.

Mozart composed his first song when he was four years old even before he had learned to read.Shortly before his fifth birthday he was able to learn a scherzo in 30 minutes.He published his first composition when he was eight years old. 

Once he picked up a violin and though he had never had a violin lesson,he was able to sight read perfectly a piece written for the violin.At a later time while visiting Rome he heard a choral work being performed and was able to remember it and write it down note for note.His father was amazed.

Leopold realized the extraordinary capabilities of his son and knew people would pay to see him perform③.So the family went on a tour that would take them to many countries.Between the ages of seven and fifteen,the young Mozart spent half of his time on tours.During these tours,Mozart heard,absorbed④,and learned various European musical idioms,eventually crystallizing(使结晶) his own mature style.

By the time he was 14,Mozart had composed many pieces for the harpsichord(大键琴),piano and violin,as well as for orchestras.While he was still a teenager,Mozart was already a big star and toured Europe giving concerts⑤.He died in 1791.

(2)如果所引导的从句只是表示一种假设的情况,从句的谓语动词要用虚拟语气,其形式如下:

过去分词作表语和状语

一、过去分词作表语

过去分词作表语表示主语所处状态或主观心理感受,相当于形容词的作用。

They all felt challenged.他们都感觉受到了挑战。

Mr Brown and Mary are married.布朗先生和玛丽结婚了。

Tom was disappointed to hear his friend was unable to come.

汤姆听到他的朋友不能来很失望。

The window of my room is broken.

我房间的窗户是坏的。

注意: 表示感觉的一些过去分词 (surprised,disappointed,excited,pleased 等 ) 及其他一些过去分词(dressed,drunk,devoted,lost,known,married,bent,recovered,separated 等)常可用作表语,表示状态。其中有些只表状态,毫无被动意义。

2.过去分词作表语与被动语态的区别

(1)被动语态强调动作,主语是动作承受者;过去分词作表语说明主语的状态或特征。

The novel was written about ten years ago.

这本小说是大约10年前写的。

The novel is well written.

这本小说写得很好。

(2)被动语态后常接by短语,表示动作的执行者;而过去分词作表语后不接by短语,但可以接其他的介词,表示特征。

The small town is surrounded with hills on three sides.

那个小城镇三面环山。

He was frightened because he was surrounded by a lot of dogs.

他很害怕,因为他被一群狗围着。

二、过去分词作状语

1.过去分词作状语时的意义

过去分词(短语)作状语,说明谓语动词的动作和状态,其逻辑宾语是句子的主语,也就是说过去分词与句子的主语之间是被动关系。

Seen from the building,the garden looks beautiful.(see的逻辑宾语是garden)

从楼上看,这个花园很美丽。

2.过去分词作状语时的作用

由于过去分词(短语)具有副词的某些特征,因此在句中可以作时间、条件、原因、让步、伴随或结果等状语。

(1)时间状语

Asked why he was absent from class,the little boy lied that he was ill.

当被问到他为什么没有上课时,那个小男孩撒谎说他病了。

Questioned by the police,Mr Brown was at a loss what to do.

警察询问布朗先生时,他不知所措。

(2)条件状语

Given enough water,the newly-planted trees wouldn’t have died.

浇足水,这些新栽的树就不会死了。

Compared with his brother,Tom seems more diligent.

与他弟弟相比,汤姆好像更勤奋。

(3)原因状语

Frightened by the terrible noise,Mary didn’t dare to go out alone at night.

受到可怕声音的惊吓,玛丽晚上不敢独自外出。

Encouraged by the progress he has made,he works harder.

受到所取得成绩的鼓舞,他工作更努力了。
